The next morning, Zoe’s phone rang while she sipped tea at Lars’ table. She set down the mug and rummaged in her purse for the phone to answer it.

“Hey, Zoe!”

“Tabetha! It’s wonderful to hear from you. How are you and your parents doing?”

“The Olympics are fantastic. What an absolutely wonderful experience. Anyway, I wanted to remind you that we’ll be home on Wednesday. Can you pick up my class schedule and books for me?”

“Sure, I can do that.”

“And have you looked at Lars’ Facebook status?”

“No, I don’t even have a Facebook account. Why?”

“He changed his relationship status from single to engaged.” Tabetha’s excited squeal pierced Zoe’s eardrums. “Tell me all about her. I want details, Zoe.”

“I’m the fiancée,” she mumbled.

“What? What did you say?” Her friend’s voice turned shrill.

“I’m the fiancée,” she repeated clearly.

Tabetha whooped, which made Zoe distance the phone from her ear. “We’re going to be sisters! How absolutely fabulous!...What?...Oh, Mama wants to talk to you.”

There was a brief rustle as the phone was handed to the next person.

“Hello, Zoe, this is Adele.”

“Hello, Adele. It’s lovely to hear from you.”

“And it’s good to hear your voice, my dear. Tabetha says you’re joining the family.”

“Er...yes?”

Adele chuckled warmly. “You’re just what my boy needs. Welcome, daughter.”

A tight anxiety Zoe hadn’t known she bore uncoiled and dissipated, leaving a warm and wonderful feeling of relief. “Thank you, Adele.”

“We’ll talk about wedding arrangements when we get back.”

“I’ll discuss it with Lars.”

She chuckled again. “My dear, as long as you’re there, Lars won’t care if we book a three-ring circus with dancing bears.”

Zoe obliged with a chuckle and the conversation soon ended after the obligatory pleasantries.

“She’s right, you know.”

“What?”

“Nothing matters other than that you are there with me.” He grinned at her. “Although, saying our vows while hanging from a trapeze might be entertaining.”

“You goof.”

He pressed a kiss to her head and rubbed her shoulder. “Come on, lazybones. You’ll be late for work.”

She gulped down the last of her tea and pulled on her coat.
